About Clam Castle, Austria
Clam Castle traces its origins back to the year 1149 when it was erected by Otto von Machland, a prominent figure who owned vast expanses of Upper Austria.
Initially, it stood as a formidable fortress, boasting two towering structures, both over 30 meters high with one round and the other rectangular. Remarkably, these historic edifices retain their original form to this very day.
Today, Clam Castle is not just a relic of the past but also the cherished residence of Count Clam, open for exploration by curious visitors.
As you wander through its halls, you'll gain a captivating glimpse into the life within the castle's walls during its heyday.
History of Clam Castle
The annals of Clam Castle's history are steeped in intrigue and transformation. Dating back to its inception in 1149, it was an imposing stronghold, featuring two colossal towers that soared to over 40 meters in height. These structures, which still stand tall, witnessed an era of change and tumultuous power shifts in the Middle Ages.
Intriguingly, Clam Castle fell into the hands of ruthless robber barons who terrorized the local populace, even facing excommunication from the Catholic Church for their ruthless deeds. In an era marked by political intrigue and shifting powers, castles frequently changed hands, each transition leaving its mark on the structure.
The arrival of the Counts of Clam in 1454 brought a sense of stability to the castle and the surrounding lands. During the tumultuous Thirty Years' War, the Clam family maintained a private army to protect their fortress. Clam village, unfortunately, bore the brunt of the times, suffering multiple burnings.
Yet, through the trials and tribulations, Clam Castle endured. It was in the mid-17th century, after the war had subsided, that Johann Gottfried of Clam undertook a monumental renovation project. He transformed the functional fortress into the comfortable, elegant castle that graces the landscape today. Johann also extended his benevolence to the village, building a church, a hospital, and water pipes for the citizens.
The 18th century saw further expansion with the addition of wings for administration, coaches, and horse stables, forming the outer yard we see today. Remarkably, Clam Castle emerged unscathed from both world wars, with only a nuclear shelter serving as a reminder of the 20th century's turmoil.
The History of Counts of Clam
The lineage of the Counts of Clam, hailing from western Austria, can be traced back to the 13th century. Before assuming the name Counts of Clam in 1454, they were known as the Perger family. Christoph Perger, who acquired Clam Castle, became Christoph of Clam.
In 1791, Carl Josef Count of Clam married Maria Anna Countess of Martinic, unifying not just names but also estates and coats of arms. The Martinic family, one of Bohemia's oldest and most prominent clans, played pivotal roles in politics, the military, and administration over centuries.
Count Jaroslav Borzita of Martinic's involvement in the defenestration of Prague in 1618 marked a significant turning point in European history, triggering the Thirty Years' War. Meanwhile, General Major Count Heinrich Clam-Martinic served as Prime Minister under Emperor Karl of Austria, leaving an indelible mark on the family's legacy.
Today, Count Carl Philip Clam Martinic presides over the estate, continuing a tradition that spans over 550 years and 16 generations living at Clam Castle.
