Ashford Castle's story begins when it was founded by the Anglo-Norman de Burgo family. They built several castles throughout the province, but Ashford, located in Ireland, remained their principal stronghold.
1589
After more than three and a half centuries under the de Burgo family, Ashford Castle changed hands, now belonging to Sir Richard Bingham, Lord President of Connaught, following a fierce battle against the de Burgo forces. A fortified enclave was added within its precincts.
1715
The renowned Ashford Estate was established by the Browne family, and a magnificent French-style château was added to enhance the castle's architectural splendor. To this day, you can still spot the double-headed eagles on the roof, proudly representing the Browne family's coat of arms.
1852
Enter Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness, who purchased Ashford Castle and extended its estate to a whopping 26,000 acres. He transformed the surroundings with new roads, thousands of trees, and the addition of two large Victorian-style extensions.
1868
Sir Benjamin Lee Guinness passed the torch to his son, Lord Ardilaun, an avid gardener who oversaw the castle's development and even reconstructed the entire west wing.
